Coming to the Aubrac in Winter: Planning Your Stay with Peace of Mind

Coming to the Aubrac in winter is the promise of white landscapes, silence and golden light over the plateau. But to enjoy it fully, it's worth planning your stay a little, the way you'd plan a fine mountain trip. A successful stay is a blend of comfort indoors… and common sense outdoors.

On the road: safety first

In winter, the roads can be dry in the morning, snowy in the afternoon and icy by evening.

  • Use winter tyres, or good-quality all-season ones.
  • Keep snow chains or snow socks in the boot, and learn to fit them calmly, before you actually need them.
  • Plan to travel during the day, avoiding night-time arrivals in the snow as much as possible.
  • Keep in the car: an ice scraper, gloves, a small blanket, a torch, a bottle of water.
  • A GPS is helpful, but checking your route on a map and the road conditions before you set off will help you travel with a light mind.

Dressing for real winter

The Aubrac cold is often sharp, sometimes with wind. The trick isn't to pile on thick jumpers, but to think in "layers":

  • A base layer next to the skin (to keep you dry).
  • A warm layer (jumper, fleece, wool).
  • A windproof, waterproof layer (parka, down jacket, coat).

To which add the essentials: a hat, scarf, gloves, warm socks, waterproof boots with a good sole. Enough to walk for a long while… and to come home and appreciate the warmth of the house all the more.

Making the most of your stay

Once you've arrived, the idea is to fall in with the rhythm of winter:

  • Plan walks of reasonable length, bearing in mind the hours of daylight.
  • Set off with a small bag: water, a snack, a charged phone, a map or offline app.
  • Tell someone your intended route if you're heading out for a longer walk.
  • And accept that, on some days, the real treasure is to stay in the warm: reading, playing, talking, watching the snow fall… Winter in the Aubrac is lived as much behind a misted window as on a white path.

With a few simple precautions, winter here becomes a stress-free pleasure: driving calmly, walking with confidence, and fully savouring the magic of the snow-covered plateau.
